To Kong or Not to Kong?

Looks like King Kong maybe in a bit of trouble. It only grossed $9.8 million on its first day in domestic theatrical release thus solidifying the theories of those mad scientist who have been screaming all year about poor box office performance.

Sure $9.8million isn't really so terrible, while it is way below the action movie opening day average its still, well $9.8million. Personally speaking I dont know who goes to the movies mid week anyway. If I had to guess I am sure Kong will be doing just fine by the time we get to the other side of the weekend. But apparently fine to this industry is not good enough.

So what gives? Why are people not going to the movies? Clearly, "they just dont make pictures like the used to" is the wrong answer. In the end perhaps we are too busy to care about what beastly beast is going reign its terror down on an already terrified metropolis.

I will see King Kong. Maybe this weekend, maybe the weekend after. But the question is, will you?

Comments:
I think that the mid-week opening creeps up on people. Most people wait until friday to see those movies anyway.

I just saw it tonight and I'm going to tell everybody I come into contact with to go see it. It was incredible. Nearly flawless.

I've been looking forward to this film for a long time... I will absolutely be seeing it!

I don't think Peter Jackson has anything to worry about. Yeah, it may be "only" $9.8 million. But, to be honest with you, I didn't even know it opened. I knew it was opening this weekend, but I had no idea it was a Wednesday night opening. I'm not in that frame of mind yet. For the last few months, practically everything has opened on a Friday. So I'm not used to it.

Plus, a big chunk of the target audience, college students, were taking final exams this week. They had a monkey all their own to get off their backs, let alone having to worry about an ape.

I'll see it, but probably not this weekend. I think the problem with movies in general is marketing. Not only has Kong's sexuality been watered down for the kiddies and ladyfolk from what I hear, but it has been shoved down our throats that everyone in the world is expected to see this movie. We've been hearing every detail about it for over a year, via advertising and Jackson's blog, so it is almost old news by the time it is released. If you don't have a nostalgia for the original, Peter Jackson is really the only reason to go see a movie about a giant ape on the loose in NYC. It is a ridiculous concept. Plus, it doesn't help that it is 3.5 hours long. You've gotta have a chunk of time to dedicate to this.

I saw it last night and absolutely LOVED it. I laughed I cried and at times found myself both repulsed and terrified. One scene had me squirming, while some moviegoers actually walked out and came back(which to me was a bit much). Peter Jackson is a genius and his love of film and the source material are evident. It served as both homage and needed update. I swear that was a real gorilla--Serkis captured the mannerisms perfectly, from how he reacts to a female to how he deals with competition to how he's amused to how he's sad---a gamut of animal emotion.

Three hours is a LONG film, especially on a Wednesday during the holiday season. I caught a 6PM showing at a theater near my job, which was the only way to do it. I'm sure it will kick ass this weekend.

ok ok ok I saw it today. It was fun. That damn gorilla did look real. I think Peter Jackson has a way of making creatures seem human like.

The end was my favorite part. Maybe its my NY pride, but seeing Kong atop the empire state building was very cool.
