"The extreme always seems to make an impression"

Ahh do I miss the angst ridden disenfranchised teen days of 1989 and 1990. Yesturday, for no apparent reason, I watched a double feature, back to back Heathers and Pump Up The Volume.

Perhaps I have a false perspective on my youth or perhaps in these two movies lies a message, a gem from long gone days of our Gen X past. It was fun to watch high school rebels making a mark, shedding the cloak of conformity, rising up and embracing individuality. I wonder how movies like these influenced us deep in our subconscious adolescent minds. Beyond the social messages, beyond Christian Slater's God like status and past the questionable fashion the truth is the late 80s and early 90s were a breading ground for Voice of Generation films. And probably these films wouldn't and couldn't exist in any other time period, especially not today.

If you want to a go on a trip, I suggest you dust off your Concrete Blond CD, crank up "Everybody Knows" and netflix Heathers and Pump Up The Volume.

Comments:
what? no "gleaming the cube"?

Cheers to that! Heathers and Pump Up The Volume were two of my 80s faves, along with the Breakfast Club. Those were the days.

omg i lovd that movie, heathers......gurl you taken me back!!!

Yeah, I loved Heathers and Pump up the Volume as Well. And Breakfast Club! (not to mention St Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink, Lost Boys, The Sure Thing, Less Than Zero ... I could go on and on and on).

My 15 year old daughter now loves all the 80's movies and music, having educated and introduced her to stuff over the past few years. She cracks up over the fasion though (don't get me even started on that - lol).

Anyways, in the words of Happy Harry Hard-On:

"Talk hard".

Bodhi :-)
Sydney, Australia

PS. Now where that cockring?...

"Fuck me gently with a chainsaw, Heather."

How many times have I used that in polite conversation?

I work with a guy from Texas who stands up and yells in a slight Texan accent...
"I LOVE MY DEAD GAY SON"
from the movie Heathers...

Its usually when one of us if freaking out about something which happens daily.. I laugh everytime.

Nothing beats
"Revenge of the Nerds"..

Gilbert: Hey Louis.. i met a girl
Louis: Gilbert' that is great..
Booger: Big deal.. did you get her pants?
Gilbert: She is not that type of girl booger.
Booger: Why, does she have a Penis?

last year when "mean girls" came out, people were saying it was an updated "heathers". give me a break. it was about as 1/2 as dark and not nearly as pointed about teen culture. just reinforced my belief that the poor teenagers today get a bunch of shite films to watch.

regarding "pump up the volume". this one made me want to start a pirate station in oklahoma...where radio was kind of a wasteland during this time (and now too actually). a few years later i found myself using an alias (dj ignatius j. reilly) and playing cds in some run down house in norman, oklahoma. we thought we might get busted by the radio police as we played "naughty" songs and stuff no station was playing anywhere i hundreds or hundreds of miles. what fun. we were never busted by the way.
